Zero to Hero: Your "No Experience Required" Guide to Starting Rugby at SAFFA Academy

Let’s be real for a second. You’re standing on the sidelines at George Washington High School, watching a sport that looks like a beautiful, chaotic mix of a wrestling match and a 100-meter dash. You see people tossing a ball backward to move forward, leaping into the air like NBA centers, and hitting with the intensity of a middle linebacker, all without a stitch of plastic armor.
Your first thought? "That looks incredible." Your second thought? "I have absolutely no idea what is happening, and there’s no way I can do that."
Well, we’re here to tell you that your second thought is dead wrong.
At the SAFFA RUGBY ACADEMY, we aren’t looking for seasoned pros who were born with a Gilbert ball in their hands. We are looking for the "Zeroes." The beginners. The athletes who are bored with the status quo and want to try something that builds more than just muscle: it builds character. If you’ve never touched a rugby ball in your life, you are exactly who we want for our "Phoenix" squad.
Why "Zero Experience" is Actually Your Secret Weapon
There’s a common myth that you need to have played rugby since you were five years old to be any good. In South Africa, maybe. But here in Colorado? We love a blank canvas.
When you come to SAFFA Academy with zero experience, you don’t have any "bad" habits to unlearn. You’re ready to soak up elite, Springbok-style coaching from day one. We’ve seen athletes walk onto the pitch at GWHS having never seen a full match, only to become the most dominant players on the field by mid-season.
Rugby is a game of "Game IQ" and heart. We can teach you the rules. We can teach you how to tackle safely. What we can’t teach is the desire to push yourself. If you’ve got that, the rest is easy.

The "Phoenix" Spirit: More Than Just a Game at GWHS
You might have heard the buzz around George Washington High School lately. The "Phoenix" isn't just a cool mascot; it represents the rise of a new era of rugby in Denver. Our partnership with GWHS is designed to give local high schoolers a high-performance environment that feels professional but remains totally accessible.
Whether you're a student at GW or live in the surrounding Colorado neighborhoods, the Academy is your home. We’ve built a culture that is passionate, intense, and: most importantly: inclusive. In the rugby world, it doesn't matter if you're the tallest kid in class or the smallest; there is a specific position designed just for your body type and skill set.
You’re Already a Rugby Player (You Just Don’t Know It Yet)
If you’ve played other sports, you’ve already done 70% of the hard work. Rugby is the ultimate "cross-over" sport. Here’s how your current skills translate to the pitch:
The Football Player: You already know how to read a field and find gaps. You know how to hit. In rugby, we’ll just teach you how to do it with your head on the right side and your arms wrapped so you stay safe and stay in the game.
The Basketball Player: Your "court vision" is elite. Rugby is all about finding space and making quick, accurate "offloads" (passes) while under pressure. If you can run a fast break, you can run a rugby line.
The Wrestler: You understand leverage, balance, and how to use your body weight to take someone down. You’ll be a nightmare for the opposition in the "breakdown" (where players compete for the ball on the ground).
The Soccer Player: Your conditioning and footwork are exactly what we need for our backs. Plus, if you can kick a ball with accuracy, you’re instantly one of the most valuable players on the team.
Colorado is quickly becoming the hottest place for rugby growth in the USA, and it’s because of multi-sport athletes like you who realize their skills have a higher ceiling on the rugby pitch.

Safety First: A Note to the Parents
We get it. Rugby looks tough. But here’s the "SAFFA Secret": because we don’t wear hard plastic pads and helmets, we don’t use our bodies as human battering rams. Rugby tackling technique is strictly regulated and focuses on shoulder-to-thigh contact, wrapping the arms, and bringing the opponent to the ground safely.
At SAFFA RUGBY, we adhere to the highest World Rugby coaching standards. Our coaches are obsessed with technique because better technique equals fewer injuries and better performance. We pride ourselves on creating a controlled, high-value environment where your athlete learns resilience without unnecessary risk. We believe in the real value of teamwork and how it builds stronger, happier kids who are prepared for the challenges of life, not just the challenges of the match.
The Roadmap: From "Zero" to Your First Match
So, what does it actually look like when you join?
The Welcome: You show up. No tryouts. No cuts. Just you and a pair of cleats (or "boots" as we call them).
The Basics: We start with the "soft skills": passing, catching, and understanding where to stand. You’ll spend time in small groups getting comfortable with the ball.
The 1-on-1 Touch: If you want to fast-track your progress, we offer player 1-to-1 sessions to sharpen your specific skills outside of team practice.
The Contact Intro: We use pads and slow-motion drills to teach you how to tackle and be tackled. You’ll realize quickly that it’s more about physics and technique than brute strength.
The Hero Moment: You put on the jersey. You stand with your teammates. You play your first 80 minutes. By the time the final whistle blows, you aren’t a "beginner" anymore. You’re a rugby player.

Join the Phoenix at SAFFA Academy
The SAFFA RUGBY ACADEMY isn't just about winning trophies (though we plan on doing plenty of that). It’s about building a community at George Washington High School and across Denver that values discipline, respect, and pure, unadulterated passion for the game.
Rugby will give you a level of fitness you didn't know was possible and a group of friends who will have your back for the rest of your life. In South Africa, we have a word: Ubuntu. It means "I am because we are." That is the heart of our Academy. You don't have to be a hero to start, but you do have to start to become a hero.
